How to Build a Showreel
That Actually
Lands Clients

Most showreels look impressive and convert zero clients. The reason is almost always structure. Here is the formula that works — and why 90 seconds is all you need.

The Truth About Showreels

Clients don't watch your showreel to be impressed. They watch it to answer one question: "Can this person solve my problem?"

A showreel full of stunning AI visuals with no context answers nothing. A showreel that shows brand films, product ads and social content — clearly labelled — answers everything.

A showreel is not a highlight reel. It is a proof document. Structure it like one.

The 90-Second Formula

0-5s
The Hook

Your single most visually impressive shot. No logo, no title card. Just the best frame you have. If a client doesn't lean forward in the first 5 seconds, they're gone.

5-40s
Best Work — Fast Cuts

Your strongest 8-12 shots in rapid succession. Music-driven. Show range — people, products, environments. No clip longer than 3 seconds.

40-75s
Categorised Examples

3-4 longer clips (5-8 sec each) labelled by type: "Brand Film", "Product Showcase", "Social Reel". This is where clients see what you can do for them specifically.

75-90s
Contact + CTA

Name, email, Instagram handle, website. Keep it on screen for 10 full seconds. Many clients screenshot this frame.

What to Include When You're Just Starting Out

The most common mistake beginners make is waiting until they have "enough client work" to make a showreel. Don't. Speculative work — videos made for real brands without a paid brief — is perfectly legitimate in a showreel.

✓ Include
  • Speculative brand films for real brands
  • Personal projects showing range
  • Any paid work (with client permission)
  • Work from courses and training projects
  • Clearly labelled categories
✕ Never Include
  • Clips that look similar to each other
  • Anything over 5 seconds unless categorised
  • Generic AI landscapes with no human element
  • Work you're not fully proud of
  • A showreel longer than 2 minutes
⚡ Update Quarterly

A showreel is not a one-time project. Update it every 3 months. Your skills compound fast as an AI filmmaker — a showreel from 6 months ago undersells where you are today. Keep it current.
