The Mindset Shift First
Freelancing as an AI filmmaker is not about being the best AI user in the room. It is about being the first person a brand thinks of when they need video content. That is a positioning and outreach problem — not a technical one.
The market for AI video in India is massive and largely unsold. Most brands don't know AI filmmakers exist. Your first client will come from you reaching out — not from them finding you.
Your first client will not find you. You will find them. That changes everything about how you approach this.
Step 1 — Build the Right Portfolio
Before you approach a single client, you need three things in your portfolio:
Pick a real brand — even a local one — and make a speculative ad for them. This shows you understand commercial storytelling, not just AI tools.
A simple product video — perfume, food, fashion. These are the most-requested projects from Indian brands and the easiest to sell.
Instagram/YouTube Shorts format. Every brand needs these constantly. Show you can deliver fast, formatted content.
Step 2 — Where to Find Clients in India
Step 3 — How to Price Your Work
Pricing is where most beginners leave money on the table. Do not price by time — price by value delivered.
A monthly retainer is the goal — not one-off projects. One client paying ₹25,000/month for 4 reels is better than chasing 5 clients for ₹5,000 each. Pitch retainers from day one.
The DM That Actually Works
"I noticed your last 5 reels don't have consistent motion graphics — it's making the feed feel disjointed."
"I'm an AI filmmaker — I build brand reels and product films using the 2026 AI stack, delivered in 48 hours."
"Portfolio: [link]. Happy to do a free 15-sec demo reel for your brand this week if you're interested."
